Dark Ages - Vicious Lie 7" (2009)

It's been a while since i've posted on the blog.
I'll try to update it a lil bit more often.

Got a few books in the last weeks, but the reading speed has been quite slow.
Not much news on the music side, well, at least none that hasn't already been posted somewhere on the internet.

Here's a new treat for you all.

Dark Ages - Vicious Lie EP

Oh man, i almost forgot about how great the 2008 demo was! Finally some new stuff, and it's great.

Wasted Time - Futility LP (2009)

Download

"New record from VA's own WASTED TIME! The LP version contains blistering tracks of violent raging fast and furious early 80's influenced hardcore, quite reminiscent of early POISON IDEA with a hint of boston hardcore influence ala NEGATIVE FX or SSD. You know exactly what to expect...a nonstop fast and ugly hardcore mayhem."

Smart Cops - Cominciare A Vivere 7"

Italian hardcore attack!
With members from La Piovra and Ohuzaru (the sound is more similar to the Piovra's hardcore than the fast thrash of the later).

"Second EP by Italy's Smart Cops, and if you loved their first EP as much as I did, you'll be pleased to know they've only gotten better at their concoction of garage-y punk and 80-style hardcore. Even better, this time they've given us a concept record about a cop who "finds himself" by becoming addicted to heroin!"

"(...) The final blow to the skull of good taste this week comes courtesy of Italy’s Smart Cops, with their Cominciare a Vivere EP on Sorry State Records. Formed from the ashes of hardcore behemoths La Piovra and Ohuzaru, the Cops are less abrasive (and screamy) than either of those outfits, and have mastered the fine art of writing a decent hook. The follow up to their self-titled EP, Cominciare a Vivere tells the tale of a woebegoten officer of the law that, in an attempt to find himself, become addicted to heroin. All of this is delivered at a rocket-fire pace in an abrasive-yet-tuneful ’80s hardcore style that should please fans of Negative Approach or gutter trash punk rock in general." The TripWire

Negative Approach?? Nah...More like Circle Jerks, DK and alikes (they cover a few songs, "Beverly Hills" and "Holiday In Cambodia")

Oz

I just loved this show. It aired a while ago in a local cable tv station and it sure turned out being one of my favourite tv shows of all time.
It shows how brutal can be life in prison, their groups, their struggles and the way to solve problems: violence and killing. Great cast of actors, sure add some extra flavour to the show.

"Oz is the nickname for the Oswald State Correctional Facility, formerly Oswald State Penitentiary, a maximum-security prison (level 4) at an undisclosed location. Many of the plot arcs are set in Emerald City ("Em City"), an experimental unit of the prison in which the unit manager attempts to emphasize rehabilitation and learning responsibility during incarceration. Emerald City is an extremely controlled environment where there are a controlled number of members of each racial and social group."

Too bad they haven't released them yet here in Portugal, let's hope some day they'll do.
Meanwhile i'm grabbing the DVDRips.

Coke Bust - Lines In The Sand

Good folks at B Music put up the last record by DC's Coke Bust about a week ago, but i've just gave it a good listen today.

You should know them by now, if you don't check it. Fast stuff, ala Heresy.

"After a 7" and demo, Washington, DC's reigning masters of thrashing hardcore have finally hit the studio to record a full-length of no holds barred, old-school hardcore punk, bringing intelligence to straight edge hardcore that is played at lightning speed, channeling the spirits of bands like SSD, Deep Wound and Youth Of Today."

The White War: Life And Death on the Italian Front , 1915-1919

Just received this through the mail.
Looks interesting, let's hope it's more reader-friendly than the ones we're "obliged" to read in university about the First World War (Furet...).

The White War: Life And Death on the Italian Front , 1915-1919
By Mark Thompson

"The Western Front dominates our memories of the First World War. Yet a million and half men died in North East Italy in a war that need never have happened, when Italy declared war on the Habsburg Empire in May 1915. Led by General Luigi Cadorna, the most ruthless of all the Great War commanders, waves of Italian conscripts were sent charging up the limestone hills north of Trieste to be massacred by troops fighting to save their homelands. This is a great, tragic military history of a war that gave birth to fascism. Mussolini fought in these trenches, but so did many of the greatest modernist writers in Italian and German - Ungaretti, Gadda, Musil, Hemingway. It is through these accounts that Mark Thompson, with great skill and empathy, brings to life this forgotten conflict."

How Bruce Lee Changed The World

Just finished watching the HDTV-Rip of the History Channel's documentary on the life and influence of Bruce Lee. From his movies, his philosophy, his fighting moves and theories about the human movement and finally, his death.
Very interesting to see how his work influenced not only fighters, but musicians, bodybuilders, actors and moviemakers. It also points out the only recent embrace of Bruce Lee by China, and the memorial they're now doing to their "most famous son".

Check this for more.

Epic shit.

Where is Dave at? Damn, after he got back to Africa for that "mental purification" he's gone m.i.a.
Fuck, we miss his stuff. Comedy Central hasn't come up with something as good as Chappelle's Show since the show ended, even Daily Show is getting less funnier since Bush went out.
At least Stephen Colbert's show is always a blast.

What I'm reading at the moment

I'm almost finishing this one. The book counts the story of the Cosa Nostra, the sicilian mafia, since it's beggining in the 19th century in the Palermo lemon groves, through the first world war and the rising of the Fascism in Italy till the present day, with a few pages on the ramifications of the organisation in the USA, the birth of it with the great sicilian influx and some early reports of the mafia related crimes in the States and early mafiosos.
It's really interesting to see how the mafia got through a lot of problems that easily could have meant the end of it, but, somehow, and through various schemes, they've survived, grow bigger and spread through the whole island and to the other side of the Atlantic. A lot of trials, a lot of evidence, all came to light in all these years, yet, not until the 1980's, with the beggining of the pentitos evidence testemonies and the work of Judge Falcone, the mafia never got hit really big.
Yet, it was not destroyed, and there's not and end in sight either.

I'm still in the beggining of these one, so can't say much about it besides it looks really interesting and well documented.
The book is about the gulags, the USSR forced labour camps that the soviet regime used throughout the whole first half of the last century. It documents the living of the prisioners, the conditions, the killings, and the great importance that the production in the camps had in the Soviet economy and war effort.
I'm still a bit past the first chapter, so can't say much about it yet...

Deep Sleep - Paranoid Futures 7"

Deep Sleep are back with a new EP on Grave Mistake.

Description on the Cowabunga! Records webstore:

"The 3rd EP from Baltimore's Deep Sleep. Pretty much a step up/continuation from the Manic Euphoria EP, which was a lot more ALL/Big Drill Car influenced and even later Descendents influenced if you will but it remained a hardcore punk record none the less, still with that subtle Adolescents/early White Flag worship going on all the way beneath the surface like they've hinted at on their past 2 EP's. Well, they continue that on this record and the ALL/.BDC inf is up another notch so mid 80's fans of SST will no doubt enjoy these nor will fans of the other 2 EP's. Good stuff still from these veteran Baltimore punks."

Idle Hands - Postponed 12"

Ok, so here's a new one. I don't think it is posted anywhere.
So good, think Statues or Marked Men.

Since i'm not too good with reviews, here's how the label describes it (and they're quite accurate...)

"Here's more punchy, tightly wound bullets of punk and power-pop goodness from everyone darlings IDLE HANDS. You can’t go wrong with the IDLE HANDS they are brilliant! On "postponed" they’ve toned down the speed a bit and you get some pure genious songs. IDLE HANDS have honed their pop sensibilities and clearly found a sound of their own. If you are a fan of the THE WIPERS, BUZZCOCKS, THE ADAGIOS, THE OBSERVERS and MARKED MEN check this album out...it's awesome!"

The Bombettes - You Have No Chance, Lance 7"

Yay! Just grabbed the latest EP by the swedish girls The Bombettes. I've fallen in love with them after listening to their previous releases.

If you're into swedish punk bands like Masshysteri, The Lost Patrol Band, Gorilla Angreb and so on, you gotta love this.
Four tracks, one of them already featured in their previous ep ('Oh Boy') with the same feeling as before. Catchy, melodic and fast paced.

Government Warning new songs/ EURO TOUR

Just a while ago a friend of mine told me that GW added some new songs on their myspace profile, so, as an avid fan, i quickly rushed to myspace to see what was it all about.

Man, their shit keeps getting better and better, can't really wait to hear both the new EP and the 2-track single they'll be releasing soon.

What sucks in all of this is that they're now coming here, to Europe, and there's no chance i can see them perform. Not only won't they come to Portugal (not that if i was expecting them to come...really, nobody comes here) but it's getting closer and closer to the end of school, so, i'm getting a lot of shit to be done in a couple of weeks. But, more importantly, there's nobody else interesting in making like +1000km to Barcelona to check them out with Wasted Time and some cool spanish bands (Insomnio and some other i do not know).

Maybe next time...

Gomorrah - Italy's Other Mafia

Gomorrah, by italian journalist Roberto Saviano, is the latest book i've finished reading.
The book is an accurate account of the napolitan mafia system and the life within it.

I got the book due to the hype surrounding the movie and i was not dissapointed at all.
In a kind of "journalistic" way, the book narrates how the drug business, construction, toxic waste and the true high-fashion sweatshops operate, and how this has been changing the Naples area landscape for decades, withouth and end in sight.

For me, a true enthusiast of the whole "Mafia" subject, it came as a new account and a different perpective from the much more "famous" Cosa Nostra, the sicilian mafia. We can no see and understand the differences between both organised crime groups, and the similarities between both of them either.

I already have the movie but i haven't watched it yet, but i'm pretty sure it won't be as good as the book that gave birth to it.

Oh, and since the author is now under police protection and working with the police anti-mafia office after receiving numerous death threats, you can't question how true and honest he is on what he writes about.

Recommended.

Formaldehyde Junkies

Damn, while browsing my old computer (while my current one is kind of fucked up) i've came across Formaldehyde Junkies mp3 i had in there.

The Total Wreck EP is surely one of the best hardcore records i've heard, ever. The speed, the anger, the crazyness and the relentless pounding on your eardrums makes this record a early century gem. Oh, make sure to hear both the Demo and the S/T Ep, they (obviously) fucking rule too!

Hit the blogs for the mp3, they won't be hard to get.

The Grand Opening

So, hopefully this will be a blog about music, books, movies, and all kinds of shit that for some reason got my attention.

I'll try to dedicate as much time as possible to update the blog.

Take care
